John and Tracey Feil

John and Tracey Feil, who are from Ampthill in Bedfordshire, are serving in South Sudan. Until recently, John was a chemistry teacher with a passion for flying; he now works as Operations Project Manager for MAF in Juba.

Background

We are John and Tracey Feil from Ampthill in Bedfordshire, where we both belong to Ampthill Baptist Church. We both came to know Christ as teenagers. Our paths met through church 18 years ago. John grew up in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. After studying biology at Queen Mary’s, London and completing a Ph.D. at Leeds University, he worked as an IT project manager. Later, John returned to science as a secondary school teacher. Tracey, originally from the North of England, is an experienced primary teacher who spent four years living and teaching in Malawi before returning to Ampthill and marrying John, who has three children. Together, we moved to Uganda with the children and both taught at the school our children attended. After returning to the UK for our eldest to do his A levels, John began to pursue his life-long passion – to learn to fly.

With our youngest daughter at university, John’s passion for flight, and the persistent but gentle directing of God, led us to pursue a calling to work for MAF. To our surprise, and through God’s wisdom, we are now in Juba, South Sudan where John is serving as operations manager. He loves the bustle of the busy ops room, where there is often a problem to solve, but always the satisfaction of seeing the impact of every flight on the isolated communities of this young and troubled nation. Every day, he sees prayers answered and God’s hand in tricky situations.
Tracey is using her skills and experience in education by teaching at a small but growing international mission school, the only one like it here in Juba and where many MAF children attend. She is also supporting South Sudanese education projects and MAF’s peace and reconciliation workshops.

When not at the office, airport or on the ‘ops phone’, John enjoys cycle rides and motorbike trips around the outskirts of Juba. He is perfecting how to make good ginger beer and roast coffee beans from the market. Tracey is getting to know the neighbours with regular walks in the locality. She enjoys finding a new recipe, watching the birds and keeping a sketchbook. Despite the challenges of life here, it is a privilege to serve and see God at work. We enjoy sharing the good news from South Sudan with you and thank you for all your prayer and financial support that makes it possible.
