Liberia

Liberia’s 14-year civil war, claimed more than 250,000 lives and left the country in economic ruin. Today, around 80% of the population live below the poverty line and the terrible impact of the 2014-2015 Ebola epidemic is still being felt.

Adding to the challenges in Liberia is an average rainfall of over 4.6 metres a year, which makes travel difficult as vehicles get stuck in thick mud, sometimes for days at a time, on the country’s unpaved roads.

MAF flies in…

MAF currently serves over 140 NGOs and mission groups working to bring hope to Liberia’s poorest, including those living in refugee camps along Liberia’s borders. In 2022 MAF flew to 11 different destinations with over 3,500 passengers.

A large number of airstrips in Liberia are debilitated and unused following the civil war, and one of MAF’s priorities is to prepare and reopen as many as possible so that more communities can have a lifeline.

NGOs who spent long hours and days travelling to reach remote locations have expressed renewed enthusiasm for an MAF programme in the country.

A trip to Sinoe County in the south-east took us the whole day. If there had been an MAF plane, it would have just been one hour.

It would have been so much easier if there was an MAF presence. Instead of spending much money and much time, we would spend less and do more.
