A road to unity

A road to unity

The world has individual-itis, a disease where people only seek the best for themselves and often fall out with others. But all's not lost.

Unity. God loves it! In fact, he is the very essence of unity and we can see that in the trinity! God is Father, Son and Spirit. Three in one!

It would be natural to assume that, because of this fact, God would desire something similar to be in existence in all of us and he does.

Check out what Jesus said in John 17!

"that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us..."

John 17:21a

At this point, Jesus was praying in the garden just before Judas and the soldiers seized him and took him away to be put on trial.

Jesus was praying to the Father about those who would believe in him that they might be 'one'. In the moments before Jesus was killed, He was praying for the unity of his people!

Unity clearly means a great deal to Jesus! But why is it so important?

"...so that the world may believe that you have sent me."

John 17:21b

Jesus is talking about how 'one-ness' amongst His followers is something that helps the world to see that Jesus is who he says he is. He said he was God!

So Christians represent Jesus correctly when they live in harmony with each other and that's why it's so important! God's reputation is at stake!

But how can it be achieved? Paul has an answer!

"Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honour."

Romans 12:10

Could you imagine what the world would be like if everyone went out of their way to help each other? The sad reality is that the world doesn't operate like this; the idea of unity is a long way off.

But this is where we as Christians need to step up! The Church needs to be those who love each other like brothers and sisters do and those who are humble enough to honour and encourage each other because this shows the world what living in harmony is like and it also represents God best!

This is simply one road into the idea of unity but why not begin with this step of loving and honouring people? Make it a daily exercise and choose to go out of your way to seek the best in the people around you and commend them for those things!

Do it today. Go on, we dare you!
