It is “screening season” for the staff of the “Gerel Uud” (Reaching the Light) Developmental Center. We are making trips to the countryside to identify children with developmental problems and inviting them to attend our annual Neurodevelopmental Clinic in the first week of June. At that time, a team comprised of a neurologist, therapists, developmental paediatrician and orthopaedic doctor will be coming to Ulaan Baatar, to examine the children and help us to plan therapy for them for this coming year.
Blizzard conditions
Our screenings have led us far and wide. In one instance we travelled by train for 15 hours.
Another time we went by car in truly blizzard conditions for 12 hours, at times having to walk in front of the car to guide it.
We have been shaken and rattled down some of the most interesting roadways in Outer Mongolia.
This past Wednesday, however, we were singing, “Blue Skies smiling at me!” [MAF operates under the name of Blue Sky Aviation in Mongolia].
Our team of 5 set off for Dornod aimag [province], about 400 miles from our home in Ulaan Baatar. We left early in the morning and were busy at work by 11:00 am.
Awaiting their arrival
We were astounded by the number of disabled children awaiting our arrival! By the end of the day we had seen 40 children with a wide variety of conditions. A large number of these children needed our services and we invited them to the city during our clinic time.
We also realized that every family needed to hear the Good News. We look forward to seeing them in our clinic and being able to demonstrate the love of God to them as we care for their children.
Working mums
We are all mothers of young children. “Screening season” can put a lot of wear and tear on our families. This week, because of Blue Sky Aviation, we were able to travel to this distant aimag in about 2 hours, screen 40 children, then get home in time to tuck our own children into bed! For us, THAT was a miracle!
