In 2009 MAF flew 524kg of life saving blood supplies from Kampala to hospitals at Matany, Kaabong and Kotido, in the Karamoja region of Uganda.
The roads from Kampala to the Karamoja region are very poor. It can take 1 1/2 to 2 days to drive there, and there are problems of insecurity. Two weeks ago two vehicles were attacked as they travelled on the road. The driver of one was shot but able to keep driving to safety. Three people in another car were killed and the car looted.
The only effective way to deliver the blood, and for it to arrive in good condition, is by MAF aircraft.
