Kodiak FAQs

Why is MAF replacing many of its Cessna 206 aircraft with Kodiak 100s?

Because MAF operates in some of the world’s most remote locations, specially equipped bush planes—primarily Cessna 206s capable of short takeoffs or landings (STOL)— comprise the backbone of the fleet. The majority of these aircraft are fueled by aviation gasoline (avgas). In many of the isolated areas where MAF operates, avgas is in increasingly short supply and increasingly expensive. When available, avgas can cost up to  4 times more than jet fuel.

Quest Aircraft Company developed the Kodiak 100 with input from MAF and other organisations that respond to humanitarian emergencies. Like the Cessna 206, this unique plane is a STOL aircraft that can fly in the jungle, mountain, and desert regions of the world, delivering cargo and passengers to isolated areas, but it utilises jet fuel, carries a larger payload, and is more cost-effective to operate.

How many Kodiak 100s does MAF plan to purchase?

MAF currently plans to purchase 18 Kodiaks over the next few years.

How will MAF purchase these planes?

MAF is grateful to God for providing generous supporters who pray for the ministry and support it financially. It is through the gifts of churches, individuals, and foundations that MAF is able to upgrade its fleet.

How will MAF use this aircraft?

This plane, “N9710M,” is assigned to the MAF operation in Kalimantan, Indonesia, where it will transport missionaries, evangelists, doctors, and humanitarian workers to isolated villages.

Like all MAF aircraft, it will carry the sick and injured to medical clinics, and deliver medicines, Bibles, building materials, food, and other necessities of life.

Where did the name Kodiak come from?

The name came from the Kodiak bear. As Kodiak bears live in the rugged terrain of Alaska, so the Kodiak is designed to be used in bush flying over rugged terrain.

In keeping with this theme, the step getting into the airplane has been designed like a bear’s claw.
