Prayer Group Leader - Felixstowe
In the early 1960's I saw the filmstrip, "Mid-Century Martyrs". I was very moved as were so many, and felt that I should add MAF to my prayer list. Although I prayed regularly for MAF, it was not until 1992, when my workload eased prior to retirement, that I joined an MAF prayer group in London. I was saddened by how few attended in one of the most densely populated parts of our land, despite excellent leadership.
My wife Jean and I moved to Felixstowe in 1996 and we felt called to set up a monthly prayer meeting using our previous leader's methods of presenting MAF's news and needs for prayer. The needs were always presented but so were the clear answers to prayer, which were such an encouragement in the task of praying "for all men, everywhere". Letters to local churches had borne fruit, and at a preliminary meeting a good number turned up or wrote to express interest. To suit all, we had to arrange two meetings on the same day, the last Tuesday of each month. The afternoon meeting involved mainly retired folk, the evening one for those who were at work during the day. With increasing age, in 2002 we had to reduce this to just the afternoon meeting. Normally we still reach double figures of faithful pray-ers. To keep in touch, a list of key points is sent to absentees and those who have moved away and wish to keep in contact.
A particular blessing has been to support David, Jenny, Graham and Jonathan Pett, from their call, through training, to serving in Arnhem Land, Australia. We have learned with joy of the Lord's blessing upon them both in some very testing times, and upon their witness (including the boys') to the Yolngu people among whom they live.
The group is now largely retirees who appreciate the fellowship and are keen to serve in later life heeding the command to "Pray to the Lord of the harvest that He would send out labourers into the harvest field." (Luke chapter 10 verse 2) and rejoicing in His provision for His servants.
