Serving overseas

Serving with MAF Overseas

MAF UK recruits on an ongoing basis for staff to work in MAF overseas programmes. A variety of roles is available, from Pilots to Programme Managers. MAF UK is keen to hear from those who hold relevant experience and qualifcations already, or those who are working towards them. For those who are progressing with gaining qualifications or experience, involvement in MAF UK activities within the UK is a way of keeping in touch and supporting the work during this period.

Candidates applying to MAF UK must be currently resident in the UK or ROI and legally permitted to permanently live and work in the UK or ROI. This is due to the involvement in fundraising and PR work carried out as part of the role whilst based in the UK. Candidates also need to be established in, and supported by, a home Church who will be able to support their calling to work overseas with MAF UK.

There is an occupational requirement for staff to be committed Christians, able to agree to and proactively demonstrate support for MAF's statements on belief, values, purpose and vision. The working environment for MAF UK overseas staff is within a Christian mission developing country context and staff are involved in working with the local Christian community to provide MAF services. For more information please request MAF UK's Recruitment and Equal Opportunities Policies.

MAF UK overseas staff need to be flexible, not just to colleagues, customers and local contacts, but also regarding the changing circumstances and environment they will be working in. The living and working environment is cross-cultural and within a developing country context, and staff and accompanying families should be able to thrive in this type of environment and to develop working relationships and supportive networks. They will also be living away from family and friends in the UK and also their home Church and it is vital to be emotionally stable and resourceful.

Overseas staff need to accept MAF UK's support raising policy which requires staff to raise some of the funds required to cover their financial needs whilst they are employed. MAF UK provides training, coaching and resources to enable this to be achieved. MAF UK also provides various allowances to cover other costs associated with service overseas.

Candidates meeting the minimum requirements for a current role will be invited to begin the selection process. If a suitable role is not available they may be asked to wait, or they will begin a more staged selection process to wait for a suitable role to arise. The selection process, and the subsequent preparation timetable once someone is appointed, will be agreed based on the person's personal circumstances, the needs of MAF in the UK and overseas.

MAF UK provides preparation training covering support raising, orientation and cross cultural working, and language training where required. The average time from formal interview and acceptance, and departure to the programme, is 6 months. During the formal support raising and preparation time staff are officially employed by MAF UK and therefore paid.

If candidates are interested in overseas work, MAF UK encourages them to research as much as possible about their field of service and overseas working life and living conditions. All Nations run various courses which are recommended. The 'En Route' course in particular helps people consider overseas work and Christian life.
