Serving overseas

MAF seeks a variety of staff to work in its operations around the world. MAF UK recruits suitably experienced and qualified staff from the UK or ROI. Applicants to MAF UK must therefore be currently resident in the UK and have legal right to live and work in the UK or ROI. This is because of the preparation and induction process which takes place in the UK and also as part of the role is to represent MAF at events within the UK to raise funds and awareness.

There is a genuine occupational requirement for staff working overseas with MAF to be committed Christians, able to show agreement with the MAF statement of evangelical Christian belief. This is due to the Christian mission working environment overseas and the requirement to proactively represent MAF as a Christian mission.

MAF UK recruits on an ongoing basis so we are happy to hear from those who already meet the recruitment requirements, or who are working towards them.

Overseas staff need to be flexible, to others around them and also to the circumstances they will face. The living and working environment is cross-cultural and staff and accompanying families should be able to live cross-culturally and to develop working relationships and supportive networks within this type of environment. They will be living away from family and friends in the UK and so it is important to be emotionally stable and resourceful.

Staff need to be willing to be part of the support raising policy which requires staff to do some fundraising in order to meet some of their costs overseas. MAF UK will provide training, resources and coaching to help in this support raising and will also provide allowances centrally for some costs.

Candidates meeting the minimum requirements will be invited to begin the selection process. Progress will be agreed to meet the availability of candidates and MAF staff involved and also taking into account the candidates family situation e.g. children in key school stages. Once accepted there are certain fixed courses which need to be undertaken which will guide the length of the preparation process. In our experience the preparation process can take between 6 months and 1 year. During some of this time new staff will be paid by MAF and working on their preparation for MAF within the UK.

MAF encourages those who are interested in working overseas to research as much as possible about their chosen field of service and also to attend events or training opportunities in order to prepare. The 'en route' training course provided by All Nations can be completed online over the course of 10 or 13 weeks. This kind of training covers cross-cultural working as well as Christian teaching on mission and skills development for working in mission overseas.
