Evacuation of Mbarara crash victim

MAF pilot Laurie Nason was called upon for a medical evacuation from Mbarara, Uganda. Jelsom, the patient, suffered a spinal injury in a car crash. The 125 mile drive from Mbarara to Kampala is very bumpy: ground transportation to a hospital in Kampala was not an option.

Laurie was met at the airstrip in Mbarara by the waiting ambulance and Jelsom’s family.

Having removed seats from the plane, to make the necessary space, Jelsom was secured to the stretcher and carefully manoeuvred into the aircraft. The 55 minute flight safely transported Jelsom, accompanied by his sister, to Kajjansi airfield, Kampala, where another ambulance met the group and transfered him for further hospital care.
