According to the news, a popular phrase on the ground in Somalia at the moment is that “
the drought in the region was caused by a lack of rains, but the famine was man-made.”
Taking the local politics aside for a moment, it makes a vital point for Christians and the world alike. While only God can control the drought, today’s famine is a man-made problem.
Famine is not a new topic, the bible speaks about it many times in the old testament. It was one of the greatest fears of the Jews and they generally saw it as a judgement from God. Yet, the bible suggests that God sends judgement but rarely in the Jews’ history. Moreover, He generally warns them that it is coming.
The truth is that God has blessed mankind with the resources to provide the modern day equivalent of manna and quail. Similarly, in my experience, God seldom provides miracles when we have the ability to solve our own problems. Rice, nutrition bars, water and much more is in abundance in the world, praise God. Logistics, money and people are all that are required to end the famine.
We have the opportunity to help and act as one. So let us do that. Paul, in his letter to the Romans reminds us that we each have something to offer in times of crisis. That problems for the body affect us all.
Perhaps you are blessed financially. Perhaps you are a prayer warrior that will stand in the gap for East Africa and petition for water. Perhaps you are a doctor and have some leave coming up. Whatever you are, I encourage you to grow in your faith by using God’s gifts to help those in East Africa.
The two things we cannot do is think that we are unaffected by this crisis, nor that we have nothing to offer. In prayer, we partner with Christ in supplication to one who can make a great difference.
Bible Passage]
ROMANS 12: 6-13
6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your[a] faith; 7 if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; 8 if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead,[b] do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
